Tools and Hardware Reviews of Porter-Cable 4212 12-Inch Deluxe Dovetail JigCustomer Review: Very versitile jig Summary: 5 Stars
I'll be honest, I bought one when they first came out and took it back. The jig itself was great but the fact that it used proprietary bits just plain ticked me off. I couldn't even get them from Porter Cable so I felt I was screwed. I knew the jig would have to really catch on and there would have to be aftermarket bits or it would be a short lived tool.
Fast forward, I bought another for two reasons. The first is that as I said, the jig itelf is solidly built and has some very forward thinking features. I downloaded the advanced manual from the Porter Cable site (which wasn't available when I had the first unit) and it offeres options for commonly avilabilable bits. It also has some great tips for using the jig in many diffeent ways for several different looks. I've used it for about everything it can do and have had no problems at all and the joints look great.
Using the built in line on the template, I quickly discovered that you can make the pins on through dovetails slightly big and then dial in to fit like a glove without having to do any test cuts on scrap wood. Then, just lock it in and do them all. I would have never guessed you could do variable spaced dovetails with a fixed jig.
The best news is that bits are readily avialable and not just through Porter Cable. While the standard ones are now easily replaceable, there are other options for more common bits. I'm very happy with this unit now and feel it's a fantastic value in a dovetail jig.
Aug 2010 - don't use it anymore as I prefer to hand cut them, but I won't get rid of it, and I'm not one to keep anything around that I don't use fairly often. In my opinion, you can't replace this kind of quality for the money. It's worth the space it takes for those thick hardwood projects that that I don't want to chisel on forever. It stays.
