The Porter-Cable Variable-Speed 694VK 11 Amp fixed router and plunge base kit utilizes a hefty 1-3/4 HP to generate a mind-blowing 10,000-27,500 RPM for ultra-precise cuts on a variety of stock. The six-position adjustable turret makes stepped plunge cuts quick and easy, and motor transitions between fixed and plunge base extremely fast. The micrometer depth adjuster keeps things incredibly precise to 1/128 of an inch. To ensure years of top-notch performance, the 694VK is equipped with a dust-sealed switch and sealed ball bearings to keep dust out. The included collets will accept 1/4-inch and 1/2-inch shank bits. I purchased a 694 about a year ago. It sat in the case most of the time until I retired last fall. Now I use it several times a week and find it much easier to use than my old Sears unit.
Well balanced, solidly constructed with more metal than plastic. Handles are well placed and it is easy to see where you are cutting. The variable speed is a must if you use bits much over 3/4". This feature allows you to move at a manageable travel speed without burn or chatter.
It takes a minute to figure out how to set the depth. It is a two hand affair with a twist, real easy once you stop trying to over think it.
As for burnt motors, I am willing to bet undersized extension cords are to blame. Most people have #16 cords 25, 50' or longer. Voltage drops, motor overheats, and it's toast. Remember, "Cheap cords eat expensive tools"
At 11 amps you want a #14 or even #12, bigger and shorter is better.
Some reviews call the design "old or dated" OK, so the point is ?
I have a bucket of all types of hammers in my shop with a couple of those alien looking, Predator Assault Hatchet, multi function things. Guess which hammers I use most of the time?
When you have lots to do, familiar, reliable tools are what you want.
If serious wood chip making is what you do, this is a great unit and a lot of value for the money.
If you want to play with the latest techno gadget LCD, multi colored, multi displaying, GPS navigating contraption, get a cell phone.
